When To Fertilize your lawn in the spring- (#1 sign you are too early)

This time of year, with the weather finally warming up, it’s natural to start thinking about early spring yard work, from pruning to cleaning your garden tools. Fertilizing your lawn might be on that list too.

But just like mowing too early can do more harm than good, fertilizing too early in the season can also be a mistake.

When Country Living spoke with turf management specialist Jason Lanier from the University of Massachusetts Amherst about common fertilizing errors, one key takeaway stood out: timing matters. Fertilizer should be applied when your grass is actively growing. If you apply it too soon, those nutrients can go to waste or even contribute to environmental issues. Nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, in particular, can become pollutants if they aren’t properly absorbed.

That means it’s best to avoid fertilizing too early in the spring, during periods of summer drought, unless you’re watering enough to support growth, or late in the season when grass is about to go dormant for winter.

For instance, even if temperatures are starting to rise in early spring, your lawn may not be ready yet. Warm-season grasses, especially, take time to fully wake up after winter and won’t benefit much from fertilizer until they’re actively growing.

Another common question is how often you should fertilize. According to Lanier, it depends on your lawn’s needs and your personal preferences. While many lawn care companies promote four-step seasonal programs, that level of frequency isn’t always necessary. In fact, some homeowners fertilize less than twice a year and still maintain healthy lawns.

You may want to fertilize if your grass shows signs of stress, such as slow growth, thinning, or yellowing, or if it’s dealing with challenges like heavy foot traffic, pests, or disease.

At the end of the day, grass, like any plant, needs essential nutrients to thrive. Some low-maintenance lawns may require very little input, but most can benefit from thoughtful, well-timed fertilization.
